Types of Acne
We often use the word “acne” when we see swollen infected pimples scattered across our face. What we are not aware of is that there are actually different types of acne. Listed below are the major types of acne.
Acne vulgaris ( Cystic Acne)
Acne Vulgaris is actually the least severe and most common type of acne which affects the secreting glands of the skin and hair follicles.
Although the exact underlying cause of acne is not known, it can be attributed to hormonal activity, diet, genetics, and over secretion of sebum.
Teenagers are mostly affected by this type of acne and about 80% of adolescents in other types. While males are affected the most, it is the females that have drastic and prolonged occurrence.
Risk factors include oral contraceptives, skin irritants, climate, stress, cosmetics, and steroids among others.
Acne Rosacea
Often called “adult acne”, Acne Rosacea is a skin problem among middle-aged and older adults. Those who are likely to get Rosacea are menopausal women and women with fair skin. Rosacea is also known to be genetic.
Rosacea reddens the center parts of the face including the pimples and the skin is swollen and feels warm. The blood vessels under the skin of the face are also visible since they are enlarged and are seen as small red lines.
The lesions that appear in a woman’s face are different from that of common acne like Acne Vulgaris. When eating spicy foods, drinking hot beverage or liquor, they get facial flushing. The flushing causes the face to appear red. If left untreated, it can cause swelling of the nose and may lead to rhinophyma.
Acne Conglobata
Acne Conglobata is a more severe type of acne with cyst formation followed by deep scarring. Males around ages18-30 are most affected by this form of acne. The main cause for this type of acne is not known, however, medical experts believe that chromosomal defects are the main culprit. In addition, most patients inherit it from their parents.
Risk factors such as anabolic steroids, halogens, and discontinued use of testosterone can trigger Conglobata. It is characterized by swelling and pain in the lesions with severe inflammation and sensitivity. It can also cause irreversible damage to the skin and severe scarring.
Without the help of a medical professional, it is quite difficult to identify the type of acne you might be suffering from.
